Best time to go
The best time to visit the area is during the ‘dry season’ which runs from June – October. The most popular time to visit is from June to August when the humidity is at it’s lowest and all areas of the region are likely to be accessible. Be aware that although the days are warm the nights do get quite cool, with the temperature dropping to around 7°C in June.
Free things to do
With so much stunning scenery and dozens of safe places for families to swim, the options for picnics and bush walks are plentiful. Take in the Nitmiluk National Park by land, with it’s range of bushwalking tracks for all ages and abilities. There are two different track options which will take you to the Baruwie Look Out and spectacular views over the park. Stop in at the Nitmiluk Centre to determine the best walking options for your family.
The Katherine Hot Springs is the perfect spot for a free swim. The pool is located on the banks of the Katherine River, surrounded by beautiful natural forest. You can park onsite and and enjoy the picnic spot next to the river after your swim.
Places to eat
The novelty of Marksie’s Stockman’s Camp Tucker night is something that will stay with your family long after you leave Katherine. It’s an entertainment packed evening under the stars with a delicious three course camp oven meal.
Check out the Sugarbag cafe at the Nitmiluk Visitors Centre for lunch. Sit on the sprawling outdoor deck and have a well earned sustenance after your morning adventures. The Pop Rocket cafe is the most popular place in town for coffee and breakfast or lunch. It’s the perfect spot for the kids to run around in the shade while parents pull up a chair under the shady trees.
Events
The dry season has a packed schedule of events in the Katherine Region. The Barunga Festival in June is a great family day, celebrating the indigenous community through music, sport and culture.
The standout event of the year is the Katherine Show in July, with some interesting activities your kids may not have seen before. Check out the tractor race or live chainsaw sculpture competition, there are also the standard show attractions of rides, showbags and farm animals.
